2006 Category Winners:

Among 41 finalist cheeses, 16 were appointed "category Champions", here they are:

Grand Champion: La Sauvagine

Category Winner and Grand Champion of the 2006 Canadian Cheese Grand Prix is La Sauvagine from La Fromagerie Alexis de Portneuf in Quebec.
La Fromagerie Alexis de Portneuf is built on tradition and family values. They produce a wide range of specialty cheeses including three category winners, one of which was named Grand Champion.

La Sauvagine, the winner for the washed rind category and also the 2006 Grand Champion, is a beautifully creamy cheese with a moist rind that ripens from the outside in. Its distinct flavour is both smooth and delicate, and uniquely balanced with a hint of butter and mushrooms.

Feta, Parmalat (ON)
This soft, crumbly Greek-style cheese is an ideal salad topper and cooking ingredient.


Soft cheese

Triple Crème Du Village de Warwick, Fromage Côté limitée (QC)
This soft, bloomy rind cheese presents hazelnut and fruit flavors, as well as a hint of mushroom and notes of butter. It is mild and firm when consumed young and soft and savoury when semi-aged.


Semi soft cheese

Tilsit, La Fromagerie Alexis de Portneuf (QC)
Tilsit is a light yellow colour with a darker yellow rind. Its full-flavoured body makes it a versatile cheese that pairs well with dark breads and ales, and can be easily added to salads, sauces or burgers.


Washed rind cheese

La Sauvagine, La Fromagerie Alexis de Portneuf (QC) - GRAND CHAMPION
La Sauvagine is a beautifully creamy cheese with a moist rind that ripens from the outside in. Its distinct flavour is both smooth and delicate, and uniquely balanced with a hint of butter and mushrooms.


Firm cheese

Gouda, That Dutchman's Farm (NS)
In addition to their smooth, nutty Gouda, That Dutchman's Farm also produces a variety of flavoured Gouda and a soft blue cheese called Dragon's Breath.


Swiss-type cheese

Miranda, Fromagerie Fritz Kaiser (QC)
Aged and washed for more than 160 days, Fritz Kaiser's Miranda boasts a nutty aroma and smooth flavour. It has a copper coloured rind and creamy interior the colour of straw.


Pasta filata

Provolone, Silani Sweet Cheese (ON)
The Silani Sweet Cheese Factory in Schomberg, Ontario, is a family business that has seen three generations take the helm since it was founded 50 years ago. Silani Sweet Cheese is currently owned and operated by three grandsons of the original founder.


Mozzarella

Mozzarellissima, Saputo (QC)
Mozzarellissima is a mild, milky flavoured cheese with a lightly salted butter flavour. Perfect for eating on its own or using in recipes, Mozzarellisima boasts a pleasant texture and stretch.


Blue cheese

Bleu Bénédictin, Abbaye Saint-Benoit (QC)
The aroma of the cheese is reminiscent of mushrooms, and it boasts a creamy, delicately salted lingering flavour.


Flavoured cheese with added non-particulate flavouring

Smoked Gouda, Sylvan Star (AB)
Founded in Red Deer, Alberta in 1999, Sylvan Star makes 25000 kilograms of cheese from 250,000 litres of fresh milk every year. In addition to their award winning Gouda varieties, Sylvan Star sells edam, cheddar and gruyere.


Flavoured cheese with added particulate solids and flavouring

Spiced Gouda, Sylvan Star (AB)
Founded in Red Deer, Alberta in 1999, Sylvan Star makes 25000 kilograms of cheese from 250,000 litres of fresh milk every year. In addition to their award winning Gouda varieties, Sylvan Star sells edam, cheddar and gruyere.


Mild Cheddar

Mild Cheddar, Armstrong Cheese (QC)
Armstrong Cheese Mild Cheddar is an ivory coloured cheese that is aged three months. It features a smooth buttery flavour and firm, slightly elastic texture. It is an ideal cheese to add to salads or to use in cooking.


Medium Cheddar

Medium Cheddar, Balderson Cheese (ON)
Balderson medium cheddar is a firm cheese that has been aged for 6 months. Its cheddar flavour is pronounced without being too sharp, making it an ideal table cheese or cooking ingredient.


Old, Extra Old Cheddar

5 year Heritage Cheddar, Balderson Cheese (ON)
This marks the second straight year that the Balderson 5 Year Heritage has won this award.
