Environmental Initiatives

Dairy producers care about the environment. In 2009, DFC has adopted an ambitious policy on environment, aiming to reduce producers footprint on the environment through the adoption of practices that:

  • limit the use of energy and water in dairy production;
  • conserve soil;
  • encourage the use and production of renewable energy on farms;
  • reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our cows and farms.

When it comes to taking advantage of environmental programs offered, dairy producers are second only to field crop producers. Dairy producers take advantage of these programs to improve manure storage facilities and handling equipment and to plan nutrient management. Dairy producers are also very interested in energy conservation, which typically includes heating and ventilation upgrades, energy use assessments and modifying farm machinery for biodiesel use.
